JOHNSON COUNTY — Just one day after candidate filing closed for the August primary election, it was announced that one candidate for Johnson County Presiding Commissioner has withdrawn from the race.

Incumbent Densil Allen, a Republican, filed for re-election but later withdrew his candidacy. Republican candidate Brandon Phelps was listed as the only candidate for Presiding Commissioner at the close of candidate filing on Tuesday, March 29.

Allen, of Knob Noster, was appointed as the Johnson County Presiding Commissioner by Gov. Mike Parson in June 2021. The seat was vacated by Bill Gabel after submitting his letter of resignation. Gabel was serving his third term as presiding commissioner.

Gabel first took office in 2011 and was re-elected to two more terms. Gabel began his third term in 2019, with the term set to expire Jan. 1, 2023.

According to information from the Johnson County Clerk’s Office issued Wednesday morning, Allen’s withdrawal from the race occurred within two working days prior to the deadline for the close of filing for the Aug. 2 primary.

Candidate filing for Presiding Commissioner will be open again from 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 5 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 8. Filing will take place in the County Clerk’s Office in the Johnson County Courthouse, 300 N. Holden St. in Warrensburg.
