HOLDEN — A Holden business is receiving community support after its exterior wall collapsed Wednesday, Oct. 14.

According to business co-owner and Holden Mayor Allen Mensch, the wall of K & A Creations, 219 S Market St., collapsed at approximately 6:25 a.m. No injuries were reported.

The affected brick exterior wall included a mural of train tracks and a depot as a salute to Holden’s railroad heritage.

“I’m disappointed, for one thing,” Mensch said. “But we do have a community that stands behind people. We’ve had all kinds of people volunteering to help or anything else we could need. We’ve got the insurance company involved. I’ve got an adjuster and engineer coming out [Thursday] morning.”

K&A Creations, which Allen Mensch owns with his wife Karen, offers locally made home decor, handmade crafts, quilts, jewelry, wine, teas, coffee and more through 24 local vendors. The business has been open for seven years.

Until the building is repaired, many of K & A Creations’ booth vendors will be without a place to sell their products in a storefront.

“We’re not going to be able to support our 24 local vendors that we have in our store,” Mensch said. “We also have a few other businesses that run out of our store. So, I mean, that’s going to hurt the business; it’s going to hurt the pocketbook. But you know, we’ll make it through. Hopefully we can rebuild and get the store opened up, hopefully in a couple of months, and we’ll be back in business and bring in revenue for the City of Holden.”

In a social media post, K & A Creations described the fallen wall as a “heartbreaking mess and a lot of uncertainty.”

“K & A Creations is more than just a store to us,” the post reads. “It’s a place where we’ve welcomed local vendors, shared local baked goodies and products, and built relationships with so many wonderful people in our community. Our hearts are heavy as we take in the damage, but we are so thankful for the support and kindness this community has always shown us. Right now, we are taking things one step at a time as we figure out what comes next. We will keep everyone updated as we learn more. Please keep K & A Creations, our vendors, and everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Holden Chamber of Commerce took to social media, offering support for the Menschs.

“…Both of these fine folks truly have a heart to make Holden a better place,” the Chamber’s post read. “We as a community need to surround Allen & Karen in the coming days and weeks as they determine the next steps for their store. Whether it’s by offering a helping hand or just checking in to see how they are doing. I know they will appreciate any offers of support that come their way.”

Central Bank of Warrensburg, which has a Holden branch directly across the street from K & A Creations, also posted.

“Like many in our community, we’re closely following the situation surrounding the building collapse in downtown Holden,” the post reads. “As members of the Holden community, we’re thinking of our neighbors and everyone affected by today’s events.”
