WARRENSBURG — The sight of Warrensburg junior quarterback Camden Mannering connecting with junior wide receiver Dorian Maham proved familiar.
The pair connected 12 times for 243 yards and five touchdowns in a 53-6 win over Osage in the Class 4 District 5 semifinal round Friday, Nov. 6, at the Warrensburg Activities Complex.
The win advances ‘Burg to its third straight district championship appearance.
“We knew going into this game that they were going to be a good team,” Maham said. “We just put our minds to it, worked hard in practice. We just wanted Moberly. We wanted to get back to that game.”
Maham’s five receiving touchdowns are a season-high by a Tiger.
His brother, junior Dominik Maham, along with senior Dorian Lee and senior Theo McCracken, were tied for the previous season-high of three — each arriving in the first three weeks of the season.
Mannering previously threw for five touchdowns against Smith-Cotton and Excelsior Springs, and had four passing touchdowns in three other games.
Versus Osage (4-7), he completed 15-of-21 passes for 291 yards.
“Dorian Maham, five touchdowns tonight,” Warrensburg head coach Chris Cavanah said. “He’s a special player. Cam does a great job of getting the ball to him. The offensive line played well tonight. Both in pass protection and opening the run game for Hunter Michel.”
Warrensburg (10-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead on its opening possession, benefiting from a 10-yard pass from Mannering to Dorian Maham.
The Tigers defense went on to hold the Indians, putting the ball back into the hands of the offense, which used a 28-yard rushing touchdown from junior running back Hunter Michel and a 2-point conversion from Mannering to Dorian Maham to make it 14-0.
The touchdown was one of three posted by Michel, who ran for 194 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries.
“Our offense tries to be as balanced as it can be,” Cavanah said. “We’re going to find a hot hand and we’re going to stick with it.”
Osage turned around to cut it to 14-6 off a 53-yard touchdown pass from junior Blaine Sperling to junior Colt Butler.
A kickoff return from Theo McCracken set up a 33-yard score from Michel, who made it 20-6 with 1:03 left in the first quarter.
Warrensburg led 39-6 at halftime.
“Our guys came out and took care of business,” Cavanah said. “That’s what championship programs do. They come out and take care of business. And now we’re on to the next week.”
The game marked the third consecutive where ‘Burg has held its opponent to single digit scoring or less.
“Our defense has really played well here in the last month of the season,” Cavanah said. “I think they continue to build on each week’s performance.”
The longest touchdown connection between Mannering and Dorian Maham arrived in the second half, coming from 50 yards out.
The fifth touchdown connection between the two brought Dorian Maham’s receiving touchdown total to 15 on the season — eight of which have arrived in the last three games.
“It just keeps getting better and better,” Dorian Maham said of his connection with Mannering. “We work every day. We have a special bond.”
Warrensburg will prepare to meet Moberly, the only team it fell to in the regular season, Friday, Nov. 13, in Moberly.
The Spartans beat Warrensburg 24-22 on Sept. 18.
“We had a disappointing performance in Moberly,” Cavanah said. “Our goal has been to get back up there.”
Moberly shut out Kirksville 42-0 on Friday.
