Arson investigation underway after fire at Leeton United Methodist Church

Posted

LEETON — An arson investigation is underway after a fire on Monday, Oct. 20, at the Leeton United Methodist Church.

The Johnson County Fire Protection District and Warrensburg Fire Department responded to the historic church, 120 N. Wall Street, at 9:15 p.m. When crews arrived, heavy smoke and flames were seen from the church.

Firefighters had the fire under under control after three hours following interior and exterior attack. The building suffered extensive damage, but remains standing.

An investigation into the fire by the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office, Johnson County Fire Protection District, Leeton Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff's Office and Johnson County Fire Investigation Unit determined the fire was intentionally set.

The investigation is being headed by the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office.

“It’s heartbreaking to see a place that has stood for generations be deliberately set on fire,” JCFPD Captain Joe Jennings said in a release. “This church isn’t just a building; it’s part of the history and identity of Leeton. Seeing it damaged in this way is difficult for the entire community.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Missouri Arson Hotline at 1-800-39-ARSON (1-800-392-7766). A cash reward is available for information leading to an arrest.

“Someone knows something,” Jennings said. “We’re asking the public to do the right thing and help bring whoever is responsible to justice. No tip is too small.”

JCFPD recovered some items that were inside the church.

The Star-Journal will have additional coverage as the story develops.
