The Missouri Department of Transportation will close the U.S. Highway 50 westbound bridge over the railroad at Knob Noster for bridge rehabilitation. Work began this week and will last until June 30. All work is weather permitting.
According to a news release, the westbound bridge will be closed for the duration of the project. Westbound traffic will be shifted to the eastbound passing lane, resulting in eastbound and westbound traffic each having one lane over the eastbound railroad bridge. Additionally, North Vaughn Street will be closed at Highway 50.
The Star-Journal previously reported that the westbound bridge over Union Pacific Railroad, built in 1956, will have its decking replaced. Jill Bruss, an Area Engineer for the Kansas City District that includes Johnson County, said the construction should prolong the bridge’s lifespan for another 20 years.
“Median crossovers will be constructed to direct westbound traffic on to the eastbound bridge,” the MoDOT website states. “For safety, (North Vaughn Street) at Highway 50 in Knob Noster will be closed. Also, the median will be closed on the north side of Highway 50 just to the east of the bridge. Businesses at this location will be restricted to right in/right out movements.”
Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones, the release states.
