WARRENSBURG — A downed utility pole and damaged transformers are believed to be related to a fire at Arwood’s Furniture Store and Mattress  on Tuesday, July 7.

According to the Warrensburg Fire Department,  firefighters were dispatched to the business in the 800 block of Pride Avenue at approximately 8:14 p.m  following reports of an explosion and large fire.

Upon arrival, crews located heavy flames along the rear exterior of the 126,000-square-foot building. Firefighters also discovered a downed utility pole with damaged transformers and live, energized power lines on the ground nearby. Crews coordinated with Evergy to disconnect power to the area.

Fire crews battled the fire from the exterior, while two automatic interior sprinkler heads activated, limiting the fire from spreading inside the building.  Fire, smoke and water damage were reported, largely in the warehouse portion of the business.

A social media post from Arwood's indicates most of its inventory was untouched.  The business, sloganned as Missouri’s largest furniture store, was not open at the time of the fire. The store is expected to reopen Friday, July 10.

One firefighter was treated and released on scene with minor injuries.

Approximately 45 firefighters from the  Warrensburg Fire Department, Johnson County Fire Protection District and Whiteman Air Force Base Fire Department responded to the fire.

The Johnson County Ambulance District, Johnson County Volunteer Fire Auxiliary and Warrensburg Police Department also assisted.

All responding agencies cleared the scene at 12:26 a.m. Wednesday, July 8.
