Filing ends for April municipal election

JOHNSON COUNTY — Filing for available positions in the April 2 Municipal Election in Johnson County closed at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26. Filing opened Tuesday, Dec. 5.

City of Warrensburg

With Tarl Bentley’s term expiring, there is one seat available on the Warrensburg City Council for the April 2 Municipal Election. Kirk Walker, former councilman Scott Holmberg, Eva Norton and Suzy Latare have filed.

Warrensburg Board of Education

Two seats are available on the Board of Education, with Tom McCormack and Shannon Bridgmon’s terms expiring. McCormack, Betsy Kreisel, Eric Stevens and Anthony Wood have filed.

Johnson County Ambulance District Board of Directors

Two seats are available on the Johnson County Ambulance District Board of Directors, as Michael Wakeman in Sub-District 1 and Juanita Moore in Sub-District 4 are up for reelection. Wakeman and Moore were the only candidates to file, so there will not be a JCAD election in April. Terms are for three years.

Western Missouri Medical Center Board of Trustees

One five-year term is available on the Board of Trustees. Incumbent Greg Hassler, who was appointed by the board to fill a vacancy this fall, is running unopposed, so there will not be an election for the WMMC board. He previously served from April 2015 to April 2023.

Johnson County Emergency Services Board

Two Eastern District Trustee positions and two Western District Trustee positions are available in the municipal election; all are a four-year term. Incumbent Melissa Frey is the only candidate for the Eastern District, while incumbent Darlene Buckstead, Scott Ammon, and incumbent David Miller filed for the Western District.

Johnson County Fire Protection District #2

A six-year term is available as board member PD Duncan’s seat is expiring. No one filed.

City of Chilhowee

Mayor Lois Morrison is up for reelection and will retain the mayor’s seat, as Morrison was the only candidate to file. Three Alderman At Large positions are also up for election. Keri Smith and Jimmy Tawzer have filed for the two two-year terms and Deborah S. Hufford filed for the one-year term. With three seats and three candidates, there will not be an election for the City of Chilhowee.

Chilhowee Board of Education

Timothy Miller and Dan Malott’s terms on the Board of Education are expiring. Malott and Matt Hoff were the only two candidates to file, so there will not be an election for the Chilhowee school board.

City of Centerview

No one filed for the two Alderman at Large positions, which are two-year terms.

Crest Ridge Board of Education

The Board of Education has two seats up for election in April, with the terms of Drew Shanks and Katie Williams expiring. Shanks filed for reelection, while newcomers Matt Smith and Michael Russell are also vying for candidacy.

City of Kingsville

The City of Kingsville did not respond by press time.

Kingsville Board of Education

The Board of Education has two three-year terms and one one-year term up for election in April. Ed Barnett and Daniel Mitstifer, both three-year terms, and Jill Scrutchfield, a one-year term, are up for reelection in April. Scrutchfield and Mitstifer filed for the three-year terms, and Barnett filed for the one-year term, so there will not be an election for the Kingsville school board.

City of Leeton

The City of Leeton has two two-year Alderman at Large terms expiring in April. Barry Uptegrove and Russ Norris’ terms are expiring. Both filed for reelection and are running unopposed, so there will not be an election for the Leeton Board of Aldermen.

Leeton Board of Education

The Board of Education has two three-year terms expiring in 2024, Michael (Robby) Myers and Melissa Myers. Two candidates, Michael Myers and Aaron Davis, filed for the two positions, so there will not be an election for the Leeton school board.

City of Holden

The City of Holden has four two-year terms and two one-year terms up for the April election. Julie Getz, Carol Mallory and Allen Mensch have all filed for reelection for a two-year term. Larry Miller's term will expire in April; he also refiled for a two-year term. Morgan Pemberton filed for a one-year term, while Jack Leary, Richard Pearson and Guy Barwick have all filed for the two-year terms.

Holden Board of Education

The Board of Education has two three-year terms expiring in April. The terms of Georgia Jarman and Bobby Zimmer are expiring. Incumbent Jarman has refiled, while Ann Cates, Robert Zimmer III, and Dillon Zavadil are new on the ballot. 

City of Knob Noster

The City Council has three two-year term Alderman positions available in each of its districts, 1, 2, and 3. Aldermen Perry Byerly, Jesse Stauffer-Baum and Tom Brent’s terms all expire in April. Incumbent Byerly is opposed by candidate Derrick Liggett for the Ward 1 position. Stauffer-Baum is unopposed in Ward 2. Brent is not up for reelection, so candidates Josh Link and Christopher S. Dennis filed for the Ward 3 position.

Knob Noster Board of Education

The Board of Education has two three-year terms expiring in April. Vice President Paul “Hillsy” Hills and member Casey Cunningham’s terms will each expire. Hills and Andrew Frencken filed for the vacant seats, so there will not be an election for the Knob Noster school board.
