The Johnson County Fire Protection District has added a Little Free Library at its headquarters, providing free access to books for community members of all ages.
The Little Free Library is located outside the Fire District headquarters at 122 W. Young Avenue in Warrensburg. The library is officially registered with Little Free Library, a nonprofit organization that supports a global network of volunteer-run book exchange boxes.
The library was painted in the same bright yellow used on JCFPD fire apparatus, giving the book exchange a distinctive Fire District look.
The Little Free Library operates on a simple “take a book, leave a book” concept. Community members are welcome to take a book to read, bring books they have finished to share with others, or simply stop by to browse the collection. No library card or registration is required.
Books currently in the library have been donated by community members and members of the Fire District. The District encourages community members to contribute books of their own so the selection can continue to grow and change.
“Fire departments have always been about more than responding to emergencies,” Fire Chief Larry Jennings said. “We are part of the community, and we will continue finding ways to be involved in the everyday lives of the people we serve. We hope this gives people another reason to stop by, pick up a book, leave one for someone else and get to know their Fire District.”
Little Free Library’s mission is to build community, inspire readers and expand access to books through a global network of volunteer-run book exchange boxes. The organization’s libraries provide free access to books 24 hours a day, seven days a week, helping remove barriers to book access.
The JCFPD encourages residents to visit the Little Free Library at 122 W. Young Avenue, take a book, leave a book and help share the joy of reading throughout the community.
