JOHNSON COUNTY — A Mission Hills, Kansas, man has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in a wrong-way fatality accident on U.S. Highway 50 in September 2024.

Peter E. Goss was sentenced to five years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on Monday, Aug. 24. The sentencing comes after Goss pleaded guilty to the charge of DWI - Death of Another Passenger, on June 22. Previous charges of involuntary manslaughter and driving in the wrong direction were dismissed.

Court records indicate Goss’ lawyer, James Hobbs, had previously recommended a sentence of 120 days in an institutional treatment program and probation to Judge Stacy Lett.

Previous reporting by the Star-Journal indicates the accident occurred Sept. 20, 2024. At approximately 10:52 p.m., Johnson County Central Dispatch advised law enforcement of a reported wrong way driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 50 Highway at Missouri 131 Highway.

Three minutes later, law enforcement advised of a crash involving two vehicles in the northwest 1600 block of eastbound U.S. 50.

A preliminary Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report published by the Star-Journal on Sept. 24, 2024, states Goss was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban west in the eastbound lane of U.S. Highway 50 at Route Z when he struck a 2023 Subaru driven by Kevin R. Wilson, of Lee’s Summit.

The MSHP arrived at the scene at 11:07 p.m. and observed a gray Chevrolet Suburban on its passenger’s side facing south in the left lane of eastbound U.S. 50 Highway. The Subaru Legacy was facing southwest in the right lane.

The officer also observed the Johnson County Ambulance District attempting to contact the occupant of the Legacy, later identified as Wilson.

Wilson was pronounced dead by Johnson County Coroner Clark Holdren and was transported to Sweeney-Phillips and Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.

Goss, who was observed with bloodshot eyes and an odor of intoxicants, consented to a preliminary breath test, which indicated his blood alcohol content at 0.16%.

Goss was arrested and transported to Research Medical Center in Kansas City.

Probable cause states Goss refused a blood alcohol test and requested a lawyer.

Goss was not formally charged in the case until June 24, 2025.

As of Tuesday, Aug. 25, Goss is being held in the Johnson County Jail.
