Man suspected of Knob Noster burglary dies in MSHP custody

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a man who died shortly after being taken into custody on Monday, Jan. 5.

The agency was dispatched to the 100 block of State Route D at 6:30 p.m. to investigate a burglary in progress with a man breaking windows.

Two troopers and officers from the Knob Noster Police Department arrived and located a man armed with a knife. Troopers instructed the man to drop the knife, but he did not comply.

A trooper deployed their taser, and the man was taken into custody. Soon after, he became unconscious.

EMS responded and law enforcement tried life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead.

The MSHP has identified the man as Bender B. Atty, 34, of Spokane, Washington. An autopsy is scheduled for a later date.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the death. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the burglary.

Findings from the investigation will be turned over to the Johnson County prosecutor.
