Mary Lou Guthrie, 93, Lee’s Summit, formerly of La Monte, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City.

She was born Dec. 7, 1924, in Pettis County, the daughter of Gillman and Willie (Wiley) Scott. On Nov. 26, 1947, she and George H. Guthrie were united in marriage in La Monte. Her husband preceded her in death by only eight months. In 1953, when she was only 29, she was stricken with bilateral macular degeneration, which at the time was not treatable. She also loved to be outside working in her flower gardens.

She is survived by three daughters, Willa Cline and husband, Bob, Overland Park, Kansas, Ann Berg and husband, Dave, Englewood, Colorado, Lynn Knickerbocker, Raytown; a son, Kevin Guthrie and wife, Kathy, Independence; a sister, Mary Hays; six grandchildren, Kristopher Guthrie, Karrie Moore, Michael and Ryan Berg, Mallory Walker, Emily Bartholomew and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Lorena DeLapp, Ruby Wahl, and one brother, James Scott.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Moore Funeral Home in La Monte until the service time of 2 p.m. with Pastor Pat Kelly officiating.

Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Special Olympics and can be left in care of the funeral home.
