Yesterday, I rode my bicycle on the Rock Island Trail, noticing that some of the sumac had already turned red. The woods have begun to thin and yellow. The air smelled of late summer, spicy with the scent of seeds, blooming flowers and fallen walnuts. I dodged a hedge apple every once in a while, as dragonflies, grasshoppers and a variety of butterflies escorted me the entire way. I couldn’t help but think about how much we have on this Earth that is worth protecting.
