Warrensburg Area Amateur Radio Club to host Field Day exercise

Posted

On June 27-28, the Warrensburg Area Amateur Radio Club, Inc (WAARCI) will be conducting an internationally observed Ham Radio Field Day, testing their equipment and capabilities to operate in case of mass damage to other communication methods.

We have gotten so used to picking up a cell phone to contact others, but these communications can be interrupted by any disaster, natural or man-made. Ham radio operators train to communicate with alternate power; i.e. battery, solar or generator.

Even though cell phone companies have emergency equipment that can be set up quickly, those can have limited reach and capabilities. They can also be quickly overwhelmed by too many people trying to contact others during the emergency.

WAARCI members will be operating on battery & generator power, simulating a disruption to power and the regular communication channels, during a 24 hour period.

Join WAARCI from 1 p.m. June 27, until 1 p.m. June 28 at 918 MIssouri 58 in Holden to observe how Ham Radio is prepared to be part of a regional emergency response.
