Matthew Rey Obenza, 39, appeared in court for the first time Wednesday, Aug. 5, on charges that were filed following alleged sexual abuse that took place between July 2023 and April 2026 at their rural Warrensburg home.
A probable cause statement was filed July 29, when Obenza was arrested and placed in the Johnson County Jail with no bond.
According to court documents, a victim reported the abuse while at school April 7.
The victim later told law enforcement during a forensic interview April 21 that they were "sexually harassed" by Obenza regularly when their mother left home.
Court documents allege Obenza forced the victim to watch pornographic videos. Court documents also describe an example of physical sexual abuse.
The mother later told law enforcement on May 14 that she had been in a relationship with the suspect for three years, and that he was the primary caregiver for the victim.
The mother also stated the victim possessed a pocket knife at one point during the last three years. The victim previously told law enforcement that she thought about using a pocket knife to protect herself from Obenza.
The victim stated they didn't, because Obenza was familiar with knees because of their military training.
Obenza is next scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12.
